Jim O'Brien

Dr. James B. O'Brien is Robert 0. Lawton Distinguished Professor, Meteorology & Oceanography and Director, Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies at The Florida State University in Tallahassee.

After receiving his B.S. in Chemistry from Rutgers, he completed a Ph.D. in Meteorology at Texas A&M University in 1966 and joined the Florida State faculty in 1969. In addition to his many publications in professional journals, Jim has held a number important scientific positions and served as an officer of several organizations. In 1999, he was appointed to the Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology and named State of Florida Climatologist. From 1995 to 1998, he President, Atmospheric & Hydrologic Science, American Academy for the Advancement of Science. He chaired the National Academy of Science Committee on Ocean's Role in Global Change from 1989 to 91.

Jim's many honors and recognitions include Foreign Fellow, Russian Academy of Natural Science, 1994; Medal of Honor, Ocean university of Quindao, China, 1999; and Member, The Norwegian Academy of Science and letters, 2000. He is listed in American Men of Science, Who's Who in the United States, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South East, Who's Who in Technology, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering, among others.
