Add the names of five more alumni to Rutgers' honor roll of extraordinary achievers. Before a black-tie audience of some 300 guests at The Heldrich in downtown New Brunswick, these gifted individuals were inducted into the Hall of Distinguished Alumni (HDA) on May 2. The HDA recognizes alumni who have brought honor to themselves and to their school through their stellar accomplishments.
Gray skies didn't dampen the enthusiasm of some 1,800 revelers who made their way back to the banks for Rutgers Reunion 2009.
Since retiring 10 years ago, Charles "Chip" Churchill RC '59 has staged a strong "second act." Along with wife Dorothy, he re-enacts before historical groups the life of a colorful Revolutionary War ancestor, in addition to his ongoing role as president of the Rutgers Regional Club of Sarasota/Manatee (Florida). Chip's next performance will take place on May 15th when he's inducted into the Rutgers Old Guard with classmates at their 50th anniversary reunion.
When Class of '69 alumni gathered recently for their 40th reunion, they were without one of their most distinguished members. He is Dr. Steven Ostro, a senior research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, who created the field of asteroid radar astronomy that has allowed scientists to not only measure the orbits of near-earth asteroids with exquisite precision, but provide images of astounding resolution and beauty. Ostro died last December of pneumonia after a lengthy battle with cancer.
